Damian Marley Joins Mauna Kea Protest

For the past two weeks, hundreds of Native Hawaiians and allied protesters have been camped out at the base of Mauna Kea, a mountain on Hawaii Island, to protest the construction of a proposed Thirty Meter Telescope at the summit. The summit is immensely significant for Hawaiian culture, representing the birthplace of the island.

Many celebrities have spoken out against the telescope, including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, but on Monday (July 29), Damian Marley joined the protest.

Damian spoke to the massive crowd about his love for Hawaii Island, and how he as a Rastafarian relates to the need to protect history and culture. Marley then delved into a performance of his song, “Everybody Wants to Be Somebody,” as well as some of his father, Bob Marley’s classic, “Positive Vibration” and “Get Up Stand Up.”

His renditions of the songs were met by roaring cheers from the crowd.
